Non-Surgical Scoliosis Treatment using the German Schroth Method

Patient performing Schroth exercises for Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a medical condition causing an abnormal curve of the spine. For a long time, the most common medical solution was surgical intervention in advanced cases. However, with the evolution of physical therapy, the German Schroth Method has emerged as the most powerful conservative (non-surgical) alternative to control and treat scoliosis.

What is the Schroth Method?

The Schroth method is a specialized rehabilitation system that has become the global gold standard in physical therapy for scoliosis. It relies on the principle of 3D Correction, treating scoliosis not just as a lateral curve, but as a complex rotation affecting the entire rib cage and pelvis.

The primary goal of the Schroth method is not only to stop the curve from progressing but to retrain the brain and muscles to maintain the correct posture in daily life.

Core Principles of the Schroth Method

  • Asymmetrical Posture Correction: Schroth exercises target stretching the concave side and strengthening the convex side using calculated postures.
  • Rotational Angular Breathing: Patients are trained to direct air during inhalation toward the flat or concave parts of the rib cage, pushing the ribs outward to untwist the spine.
  • Continuous Postural Awareness: Teaching the patient how to visually and physically correct their posture during sitting, walking, and sleeping.
