Geriatric Rehab & Fall Prevention Programs

Elderly patient receiving physical therapy for balance and mobility

As we age, our bodies naturally lose muscle mass, bone density, and joint flexibility. This physical decline often leads to a loss of independence and, most dangerously, a high risk of falling. Geriatric Rehabilitation focuses on keeping older adults active, safe, and capable of performing their daily routines with confidence.

Compassionate & Safe Care

Treating elderly patients requires patience, a highly secure environment, and specialized clinical knowledge. At Viva Physio in Nasr City, our geriatric programs are overseen by Prof. Dr. Abeer Elwishy. We consider the patient's entire medical history—including arthritis, heart conditions, or osteoporosis—to design a safe and effective exercise regimen.

A fall in an older adult can lead to devastating consequences, such as hip fractures. Our Fall Prevention Program is specifically designed to retrain balance reflexes and strengthen the legs to significantly reduce this risk.

What Our Geriatric Program Includes

  • Balance & Proprioception Training: Safe exercises using parallel bars and stabilizing equipment to improve the body's natural righting reflexes.
  • Osteoarthritis Management: Gentle joint mobilization and pain-relief therapies (like Electrotherapy) to ease the chronic pain of aging joints.
  • Functional Strengthening: Focusing on muscles essential for daily life, such as the quadriceps (for getting out of a chair) and the core (for upright posture).
  • Osteoporosis Care: Weight-bearing exercises carefully prescribed to help maintain bone density safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physical therapy help my elderly parent walk without a walker?

The goal of our geriatric physical therapy is always to maximize independence. While some patients may still need a mobility aid for safety, our strengthening and balance programs at Viva Physio can significantly reduce their reliance on it and make their walking much more stable.

Why do older adults lose their balance so often?

Balance relies on three systems: vision, inner ear (vestibular), and proprioception (sensors in the joints). Aging degrades all three, compounded by muscle weakness. Our Fall Prevention program specifically trains these systems to work together again.
